Setting up

Wear gloves for assembly, as the maker asks. Fold the four legs down, fit the undershelf at the height you want with the screws supplied, and turn it upright.

A real bench that fits in the van.

Catering needs a proper work surface on site, and a trestle table is not one.

Open, this is a 1220 by 610 mm stainless bench at standard working height with a full shelf underneath, which is enough for two people to plate or one to prep. Top, shelf and legs are all 0.8 mm stainless, so it takes the same knock, splash and wipe-down as the fixed benches back at the kitchen, and it does not soak up anything on the way home.

Folded, the legs fold down against the top. It goes in the back of a van, behind a door at a school canteen, or against the wall of a shed between weekends. At 12.55 kg one person carries it.

Goes with.

What this usually leaves the warehouse with.

Legs that lock and fold.

The four legs fold down quickly, the way a good site table does, but in stainless rather than painted steel. The shelf fixes between the legs with screws and its height adjusts to suit what you store under it. To pack up, take the shelf out and fold the legs down against the top.

Stainless all the way down.

The top, the shelf and the legs are 0.8 mm SUS201 stainless, which the maker rates above the 430 grade and galvanised steel that cheaper tables use. It resists rust where the legs touch a wet lawn, and the smooth surface wipes clean. Wipe it down with the rest of the kit at the end of the day and it goes back in the van clean.

Anywhere the job is.

Weddings on a lawn, a school fete, a market stall, a pop-up bar, a barbecue for two hundred. It is also the spare bench a small kitchen pulls out for a big prep day and folds away after.

Two versions.

Same top, same folding legs. The two-tier adds the undershelf, which is the one to choose unless the table lives where a shelf gets in the way.

Questions we get asked

How much weight will the top take?

Enough for a full day of catering prep: trays, chafers, a bain marie and the boxes underneath. Spread heavy items across the top rather than stacking them in the middle. The maker does not publish a load rating.

Does it fit in a car?

Folded it is 1220 mm long and 610 mm wide with the legs down against the top, so it lies flat in a van, a ute tray or across the back of a wagon with the seats down. It will not fit in a sedan boot.

Is it stable on grass?

On firm, level ground, yes. There are no levelling feet, so on a slope or soft ground put a paver or packer under a leg to level it and stop it sinking during service.

Why do the instructions say to wear gloves?

The maker requires gloves during assembly. Stainless edges can be sharp when new, so for the first set-up gloves are the sensible thing.

How do I clean it after an event?

Warm water and detergent, then dried. Rinse the legs if they have been in wet grass. Fold it only when it is dry so nothing sits between the top and the legs on the drive home.
