Setting up

Lay the pad flat on a bed, a couch or the floor, plug the controller lead into the socket on the edge, set a temperature and a timer, and leave it. It climbs to the setting on its own and holds there until the timer runs out. When you put it away, roll it loosely rather than folding it hard across the stones, and keep the controller in the carry bag with it.

Warmth that holds its setting.

A square amethyst pad with a wired controller, a temperature you pick to the degree and a timer that turns it off for you.

The pad is 460 mm square and 22 mm thick, which is about the size of a large cushion. Natural amethyst sits in the top layer over a carbon fibre heating element, so the surface warms evenly rather than in hot stripes. The controller on the end of the lead sets anything from 39 °C, which is close to skin temperature, up to 71 °C, and it stays on the number you chose.

The timer runs from off to twelve hours and the pad shuts down when it finishes, so there is nothing to remember at bedtime. It weighs 2.57 kg and folds into the carry bag, which is enough to move it from the lounge room to the spare room without unplugging your evening.

What this usually leaves the warehouse with.

Amethyst over a carbon fibre element.

Under the cover, natural amethyst is laid across a carbon fibre heating element. The stones are a material, not a coating, so the top of the pad has a little texture to it and warms through rather than glowing hot in one spot. The whole thing is 22 mm thick, which is thin enough to sit under a light blanket without any bulk.

  • Carbon fibre heating element underneath

One number, one timer.

The controller hangs off a lead at the edge of the pad so it sits on the arm of a chair while you use it. Set the temperature anywhere from 39 to 71 °C and the timer from off to twelve hours. It holds the number you chose, remembers it for next time, and switches itself off when the timer ends.

Light enough to move.

At 2.57 kg it lifts with one hand. It works on the couch in front of the television, on a made bed, on a chair on the back verandah with a power point nearby, or on the floor. The carry bag takes the pad and the controller together, which makes it an easy thing to pack for a weekend away.

Questions we get asked

How hot does it get?

The controller sets anything between 39 °C and 71 °C. The low end is close to skin temperature and the top end is hot to the hand, so most people find their number somewhere in between and leave it there. It remembers the last setting, so you do not have to find it again next time.

Does it switch itself off?

Yes. The timer runs from off to twelve hours in the controller, and the pad shuts down when the time is up. If you want it on for twenty minutes while you read, set twenty minutes and forget about it.

What is actually inside it?

Natural amethyst laid over a carbon fibre heating element, under a fabric cover. That is what gives the surface its texture and its weight: 2.57 kg for a pad 460 mm square and 22 mm thick.

Can I fold it up?

Roll it loosely rather than folding it hard. The stones sit in the top layer and a sharp crease across them is the one thing that will shorten its life. The carry bag takes it rolled, with the controller alongside.

How do I clean it?

Unplug it and let it cool, then wipe the cover with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent and dry it flat. Do not soak it, put it in a washing machine or run it while it is damp; the element and the controller lead are not made for that.
